Sorry about the mushy stuff

As it does every year, it’s come to my attention that some people aren’t big fans of Valentine’s Day. Even though I’m married I completely understand the loathing of this holiday. After all, who likes a holiday that either:

  • A. reminds you that you’re single/in a not-so-serious relationship, or
  • B. obligates you to buy a ton of shit just to show your significant other how much you care about them? (nothing says “I love you” like a box of chocolates from Walgreens, right?)

Up until meeting Chris I was single on every Valentine’s Day. I hated it and always thought that if you love someone you should say it every day, not just when Hallmark tells you to. Nothing would drive me crazier than the girls who would go out of their way to show everyone all the crap their boyfriends bought for them. I wondered what it would be like to have someone “spoil me” like that, although I never thought I’d be the kind of girl that would want it. And now that I’m married, I know I’m not.

Chris and I didn’t do anything fancy yesterday, it was just another Tuesday. I don’t need to wave a banner proclaiming my love for him, because he already knows I do (and vice-versa).

But I am incredibly grateful to have him in my life. Not just as my husband, but as my bestfriend. And after 28 years the only thing I’ve learned for sure is that nothing ensures your happiness more than expressing gratitude for your life and the things in it.

So to everyone who hates Valentine’s Day and the mushy stuff that comes with it, don’t worry, you won’t see me showing off a bouquet of roses or gushing over some necklace from a chain jewelry store at the mall. You will however, occasionally see me post something about the person I share my life with and love, someone I never thought I’d actually find.

So for that, I apologize.

No matter what your relationship status is, I hope you all take a minute to truly appreciate your life and the people in it. Love comes in all different forms, and should never be taken for granted.

Happy (belated) Valentine’s Day
